Letter from the Administrator
The Holidays are fully upon us! I hope you all had a Wonderful Thanksgiving full of happiness, gratefulness and an abundance of kindness. Those of you who were courageous enough to tackle Black Friday, I hope you stayed safe and were met with kindness there too.
In December we celebrate numerous holidays according to our individual belief systems and cultures. Let’s not forget to continue the kindness campaign this holiday season. Embrace each other and our differences. Take time to understand others’ beliefs. The following are examples of Holidays celebrated in December in addition to Christmas:
Hanukkah – commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. People celebrate by lighting their menorahs, spinning dreidels and eating delicious foods!
Kwanzaa – Celebrates African Culture. There is a big feast on the 6th day. Gifts of Kuumba (creativity) are given to loved ones. Kwanzaa is also celebrated by lighting the Kinara, performing and listening to traditional music and discussing African principles and history.
Las Posadas – Celebrated by some Hispanic families. Each of the 9 nights of Los Posadas is celebrated with gifts, pinatas, songs, parties, tamales, and prayer.
Understanding other cultures and beliefs is a healthy way to learn and accept that we are different. Let’s embrace our differences and a JOYOUS HOLIDAY SEASON!
